The Mission
Khattat is a gamified learning tool for designers. Not a cultural archive, and not just a font reference library. Its sole purpose is to make the practice of Arabic calligraphy learnable, step-by-step, without a traditional teacher.
Think of it as Duolingo, but for Arabic calligraphy. It structures a complex, traditionally gatekept art form into a digital, self-directed journey: from theory and Islamic art philosophy, to letter-by-letter drawing practice with XP rewards to maintain motivation.
The platform is for the designer who is curious but doesn't know where to start. You don't need a reed pen. You don't need an ustaz. You just need to begin.
How it Works
Theory First
Each lesson begins with structured theory: the history, proportions, and philosophy behind the script. Master the "why" before you practice.
Letter-by-Letter Practice
Using a simulated calligraphic nib at 40°, you draw each letter on a digital canvas with a ghost guide beneath your stroke.
XP & Streaks
Every completed lesson earns XP. Daily streaks keep you accountable. Progress is saved to your personal rank board.
Unlock the Next Mission
Lessons unlock sequentially, just like a game. Nail the fundamentals before moving to the next group of letters.

Research Background
UNESCO 2021
Arabic calligraphy was added to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as an endangered practice, due to the decline of calligraphers and teachers as technology advanced.
rate interest in Arabic calligraphy among younger generations as low
believe lack of awareness is the biggest threat to preservation
believe lack of training & access to learning is a key challenge
believe integrating calligraphy into design curricula is most effective
believe a Duolingo-style game is an effective preservation method

This project emerged from a personal frustration: being interested in Arabic calligraphy but having no accessible way to learn it digitally. Khattat is both a research outcome and a working prototype, built to test whether gamification can genuinely lower the barrier to entry for this endangered art form.
